As the weather gets nicer we all get excited for vacations. We also get excited for trips to local lakes, and even to riverside park to play sand volleyball. There are many reasons to enjoy sand, and here are a few ways that it relates to your feet:
-Sand is good for your skin. While walking in sand, it works to natural exfoliate the skin on your feet. The sand helps to rub off dead skin cells, and can actually improve the look of the natural calluses on your feet.
-Sand is good for you feet because it absorbs impact. Unlike concrete or asphalt, sand gives under your feet. This reduces the impact that your feet, ankles, and legs receive when walking or running. You can exercise in sand in either bare feet or shoes, but keep in mind that shoes give added protection to your feet and ankles not only from impact, but also from debris and possible trauma.
-The feel of sand and good views are likely to encourage you to get out for a walk- which is great for your body and mind. So take advantage of beaches, sandy lakes, and other scenic walking areas.
-Keep in mind location when planning your next vacation. Look for areas that have good foot access to the beach as well as entertainment. With a little planning, once you arrive at your destination you can ditch the car. A "walking vacation" has many benefits: it is good for your body, it is enjoyable, it provides time to talk with your spouse, family or other vacation partners, it reduces the cost of gasoline (as well as reduces admissions), and it removes the hassle of finding parking.
