Van Buren State Park!
Does this name sound familiar? It is likely to if you live in Findlay. It is often easy to overlook the fact that we have a state park just under 8 miles north of our city! This si a great way to experience a camping trip with you family, in a convenient, close, and inexpensive location.
This is a great way for novice campers to get their first experience with the outdoors. If your kids (or you for that matter) have never camped before, this close location makes it perfect. If you forget a supply or decide in the middle of the night that you are too cold or too wet, you can always drive home, an option that most campers don't have. It is a great way to learn to camp, while still having a safe backup plan and being close to home. Perhaps you only have a partial weekend for a trip, this accomadates that busy schedule. Camp for a couple of days and one over-night and you will still have plenty of time to get home for that meeting, baseball game, church service, graduation party, or whatever event you may have planned.
The park has many great activities available, with 10 miles of hiking trails, 12 miles of multi-use trails (mountain biking, horseback riding), a mile of river access, boating, fishing, 251 acres of land, picnic areas, a nature center, ampitheater, and many camping sites (both electric and non-electric), including horse camping.
If you think you might be interested in taking a short (or long) camping trip at this location, visit their website for contact and reservation information: http://www.dnr.state.oh.us/parks/vanburen/tabid/794/Default.aspx
